We are all familiar with transducers, though we don't know them by that name. A transducer is something that changes energy from one form to another. Here are some examples:

Name Takes in Turns it into
Motor Electricity Movement (kinetic or gravitational energy)
Microphone Sound Electricity
Lamp Electricity Light
Loudspeaker Electricity Sound
Wind turbine Air kinetic energy Electricity
Light sensor Light or heat Electricity
Dynamo Movement energy (kinetic) Electricity
Thermocouple Heat Electricity
Strain gauge Tensional energy Electrical change

Notice that electricity always appears in these examples either as the input or output. Computers work with electricity so can respond to (read) electrical inputs, and create electricity as an output (write) to control things. For more information see the page on Arduino boards.
