Binham fly-in June 2018

A delightful warm day. There was a strongish breeze but it didn't put people off flying. The Silver City Bristol Freighter that I can remember seeing taking off from Southend while I was on the beach as a kid made an interesting model. It mostly flew from Lydd in Kent. However it suffered a loud and untimely end and as I drove out the remains were being burned on a bonfire.

The large lightweight model marked F5 is a Ponnier D.III. It uses wing twist rather than ailerons. The servo pulls the rear of one wing down. A cable attached to the top of that wing runs over a pulley on the fuselage and pulls the rear of the other wing up. However down is larger than up so there is strong adverse yaw. The pilot told me that he has to apply reverse rudder before twisting the wings. He said it was a fast and tricky learning moment. The Ponnier came a very close second in the 1913 Gordon Bennett Trophy race to a Deperdussin Monocoque.
